Qwerty – Gaël Faye | English Translation and Explanation

The City of London, featuring The Gherkin as mentioned in Gaël Faye's song, QWERTY.
The City: London’s financial district, featuring The Gherkin as mentioned in Gaël’s song, QWERTY.

Album: Pili Pili sur un Croissant au Beurre
Artist: Gaël Faye 🇫🇷🇷🇼

Gaël Faye is a French-Rwandan rapper and writer. His album, Pili Pili sur un Croissant au Beurre, is a metaphor for himself: half French (croissant au beurre – butter croissant) and half Rwandan (pili pili – a Rwandan chili sauce). He has great flow, and his lyrics are poignant, touching on politics, corruption and cultural identity.

In his track, Qwerty, Gaël raps about his time working in finance in London before he was a singer. Below is my English translation of the lyrics followed by a list of useful vocabulary.

Lyrics

Verse 1

A great business school, an end-of-studies internship

He dreams of going abroad to get rich

The City, Lloyd’s, the building in the shape of a cucumber

Of getting away from it all, in the shadows, of moving to London

Se mettre au vert: to go to the countryside, to leave the city (ironic because he moves to another big city, London.)

France, its routine, prejudice in his eyes

Il jouera son autre manche outre-manche maritime

He’ll play his other hand, across the Channel

La Manche: the English Channel

JCD, jeune cadre dynamique compétitif

A yuppy (young ambitious professional)

Consulting Marketing Finances is not really his passion

But here he is, motivated to work for the next 10 years

To save up enough money and then he’ll get out

Even if he ends up failing, he can fall back on

his Master’s degree and 10 years of experience

BAC (baccalauréat): equivalent of a high school diploma, or A-Levels in the UK
*In Quebec French, bac, means a Bachelor’s degree, which is ‘une licence‘ in France.
BAC+5: bac plus 5 more years of education, thus a Master’s degree.

Because deep down, he doesn’t want this corporate life

In the rat race just to pay his taxes

Métro boulot dodo: lit. commute (metro, the Tube, subway…), work, sleep. It describes the mundane daily life of the average worker.

Because ever since he was young he wanted to pave his own path

He always dreamed of being an artist

Chorus

Mon père m’a dit: « méfies-toi du cynisme
My dad told me: “beware of cynicism

L’avenir appartient aux idéalistes »

The future belongs to the idealists”

When I grow up, I wanted to be an artist

Juxtaposition of the future and the past tense; Gaël emphasizes that his childhood dream is now nothing but a thing of the past.

Today I’m a pianist on a QWERTY keyboard

Verse 2

8H30, Liverpool Street Station, East London
8:30, Liverpool Street Station, East London

Hired at the end of his internship, it’s autumn

Son profil correspondait au poste à pourvoir
His profile matched the position to be filled

Flexible, autonomous, the qualities you had to have

Environnement multiculturel, métier transversal
Multicultural environment, interdisciplinary role

Open space, activités internationales
Open space, international activities

The years pass like the breaks at work

At the coffee machine, their smiles hide so much

Les intrigues rythment la vie au bureau
Office politics punctuate life at work

In good grace or in disgrace with the bosses

Qui aura sa promo? Qui sera licencié?
Who will be promoted? Who will be fired?

How much will the year-end bonus be?

Et puis photo tagué, et puis chaté discret
And then a tagged photo, and then hushed discussion

And then look out, the manager might walk by

Goals, profits, competitive to the core

Entrailles: lit. guts, insides

He has sculpted himself a mask needed for work life

Chorus

Mon père m’a dit: « méfies-toi du cynisme
My dad told me: “beware of cynicism

L’avenir appartient aux idéalistes »

The future belongs to the idealists”

When I grow up, I wanted to be an artist

Today I’m a pianist on a QWERTY keyboard

Verse 3

6H30, le réveil électronique tout redémarre
6:30, the alarm goes off, everything restarts

Sleep late, wake up early, he runs to not be late

He wants to change everything, he thinks about it, he tells himself

He dreams about winning the Friday lottery draw

Every morning, the same hellos to the same people, in the same place

Routine, daily life, funeral procession, an ordeal

Chemin de croix: Stations of the Cross/Way of the Cross, the path along which Jesus carries his own cross. This French expression is used to describe a tough journey, an ordeal.

Every morning there’s the horoscope in the free newspapers

And every night the blue glow of the TV in good people’s homes

The time of disappointment, he’s got a belly, he’s wallowing

Has he respected the dreams of the child he once was?

But this time it’s too much, he needs to get out of this deadly cycle

Because he’s bored to death, he’ll fly out of his cage

Bocal: fish bowl

He’ll spread his wings, he won’t be afraid to try

He’ll finally live the life he was meant to live

And to end this story, 10 years later, here he is again

In Paris, he’s a pianist… on an AZERTY keyboard

The French keyboard is arranged as AZERTY instead of QWERTY.
